There have been numerous accounts where foreign visitors have been caught in a strong undertow in Reynisfjara and in 2007 a foreign woman was swept into the ocean by a large wave and lost her life.

Uptaded at 11.30: According to newsagent DV, six people were swept into the ocean near Dyrhólaey by a huge swell. None were injured.

Tour guide Jakobína Davíðsdóttir was with the group when the incident occurred. A Spanish couple was among those the freak wave swept away.
“They might have gone a little too close to the shoreline, but I wouldn’t say that they behaved recklessly. This huge wave simply appeared out of nowhere,” Jakobína told DV.
