The man who was arrested last night after a standoff with the Metropolitan Police and Police Special Forces after he assaulted and threatened police officers was not armed with a gun as originally believed. The man had threatened officers who were responding to a complaint over noise coming from the man‘s apartment, claiming he was armed with a firearm.
Margeir Sveinsson, deputy chief with the Metropolitan Police, told the local news site visir.is that the man had been armed, although not with a gun. “He did not resist arrest, because he didn’t get the chance. But he was armed with a golf club and a knife when we arrested him.”
Thirty officers participated in the operation which lasted almost three hours. The man’s mother lives in the apartment.
A long criminal record
Visir.is also reports that the man has a long criminal record, including narcotics and weapons offenses. He was arrested in 2004 for firing a shotgun at homes, cars and boats in Reykhólar village in Western Iceland and in 2008 he was sentenced to prison for smuggling cocaine. All in all he has been sentenced thirteen times for various offences since 1998.
According to court records the man suffers from mental problems, and has struggled with alcohol and substance abuse.
