Search and rescue units have begun an extensive search for a German hiker who went missing yesterday in the area between Hofsjökull glacier and Kjölur mountain road. Weather conditions in the area are very poor and have hampered search efforts.
The hiker got separated from his companion, who managed to find his way down towards the Kjölur road and call for assistance.

Rescue volunteers have been searching for the man since midnight, without any luck. A helicopter will begin a search as soon as the weather and visibility clears-up.
Update: The German hiker has been found safe and sound. Around seventy search volunteers partook in the search.
The two German hikers had taken a bus to Kjölur mountain road yesterday and had planned to hike to Sáta, northeast of Hofsjökull glacier, but became separated around three o’clock. One of the hikers made it back down to Kjölur road and called for assistance.
