13. mar 2023 20:25

The IMO has issued a severe weather warning for tomorrow, Tuesday, as a strong easterly wind passes over the country. Gales will reach more than 25 metres per second (56 mpg/90 km per hour) in mountainous and exposed areas. The heavy winds and snowfall will create extremely bad travel conditions all over the country. People are advised not to travel between regions tomorrow.

A red warning for avalanches has been issued for the Tröllaskagi region, North Iceland. According to the IMO, an avalanche hit Siglufjarðarvegur road early Sunday morning, and two additional avalanches reached the Ólafsfjarðarvegur road later that same morning. Both roads are currently impassable and closed to traffic.  More avalanches may be expected today, Monday, and newly fallen snow will remain somewhat unstable during the next days.

Updated at 10.45 am: Ólafsfjarðarvegur has been reopened to traffic. Siglufjarðarvegur road will reopen at noon.
