The Icelandic economy will need to import somewhere between 2,500 and 4,000 foreign workers annually for the foreseeable future. The reason is that the Icelandic labour force does not grow fast enough to keep up with the growing economy.
According to Business Iceland an added factor is that the number of new cases of disability have increased significantly in the years 2010-2015, outpacing the growth of the labour force. Last year the number of people who exited the labour force due to disability was greater than the number of new entrants to the labour market. The natural growth of the labour force will then also slow down over the next decade.
The result is that Iceland will need to import foreign workers to man new jobs which are being created. Business Iceland estimates that the number of foreign workers needed annually will be at least 2,500 and as many as 4,000.
