Police was notified at 15:10 that the plane had disappeared and rescue units and first responders were immediately dispatched by helicopter, as the plane was located a good distance inside a rough lava field. Ambulances and search and mobile rescue teams were also dispatched to the scene. The plane was found half an hour after police was notified of its disappearance. The two men were dead when first responders reached the plane.

Both men, who were experienced pilots, were instructors at the Icelandic Flight Academy. The two men were in their 20s and 30s. According to a public announcement on the web page of the Icelandic Flight Academy, the plane, which was a small two seat Tecnam P2002-JF, was one of five new planes of that make which the academy had received earlier this month. The Icelandic Transportation Safety Board has launched an investigation into the causes of the accident.
