Two Icelandic climbers, Ingólfur Axelsson and Vilborg Arna Gissuradóttir, are safe and sound at Everest base camp after a massive avalanche killed at least 13 Nepalse guides in an area known as the “popcorn field” just above the base camp.

Ingólfur Geir Gissurason, who reached the summit of Everest last year, told ruv.is that the “popcorn field” is the most dangerous part of the mountain. The base camp is 5,800m (19,000ft) above sea level.

Ingólfur explains that the local guides, often referred to as Sherpa guides because of their ethnic group, prepare the mountain for climbers and risk their lives in doing so. No climbers are allowed up the mountain unless the Sherpa have completed laying a new track for every season.

As reported by mbl.is, the avalanche could affect Vilborg’s and Ingólfur's hike to the summit. Both had expected to reach the peak between May 13th and 25th.
