Two foreign travellers suffered fatal hiking accidents on Friday. The accidents took place in Kirkjufell mountain in West Iceland and Hljóðklettar cliffs in the Jökulsárgljúfur canyon in North East Iceland.

Shortly after three in the afternoon the Police in North East Iceland called for the assistance of the Coast Guard to evacuate an injured man to Reykjavík. The man had suffered critical injuries when he fell 15-20 m (49-66 ft) in cliffs in Jökulsárgljúfur canyon. The cliffs where the man fell are called Hljóðaklettar, The Cliffs of Sounds or Echo Cliffs, a beautiful formation of basalt columns, lie some distance from the Ring Road.
Shortly after police had requested the assistance of the helicopter doctors at the scene of the accident had pronounced the man dead. The police has not released any further information on the accident.

Shortly after five in the afternoon ICE-SAR units in Snæfellsnes peninsula were dispatched to Kikjufell mountain near the town of Grundarfjörður on the northern coast of Snæfellsnes. A woman, who had been hiking in the mountain with two other people, had fallen in the steep rocky western slopes of the mountain. The place where the woman had fallen down at least 50 m (164 ft) down a cliff.
The search and rescue teams managed to get to the woman, which was immediately taken by the Coast Guard emergency helicopter to the National Universiy Hospital in Reykjavík. The woman had suffered critical injuries in the fall, and was pronounced dead shortly after.
The nationality or age of the woman has not been released, but according to the Icelandic National Broadcasting Service the woman was travelling in Iceland with her husband and a second couple. Two of her travel companions were hiking with her in the mountain when the tragic accident took place.
