To embark on a photographic and adventure trip around Iceland starting late November is not a standard project by any means. And planning to spend some nights in a tent during the journey is literally unheard of. Well, until now because that is the trip two Australian mates began from Reykjavík last Thursday.
Michael Vettas and Gilbert Romane, photographers and friends from Sidney and Newport in Australia, are spending three weeks in Iceland taking pictures, videos and getting to know the country.
Michael and Gilbert visited Iceland Insider’s office last week and showed us their travel plan. Heading on the road in a 4wd jeep they intend to take extended detours from the Ring Road to visit many of Iceland’s most scenic areas.
It’s an ambitious and brave plan indeed and will not be easy to pull off. Now is the time when winter has arrived in all its ferocity in Iceland. Meaning potential extreme wind, snow, frost rain and icy roads; which is exactly the combination that welcomed the Michael and Gilbert during their first Icelandic weekend.
The two Aussies were largely unmoved when we heard from them early Monday morning. They had nevertheless experienced some difficulties. “We had, well I had, some drama in the last 36hrs. The drone crashed and is dead,” said Michael.
They spent last night in a mountain cabin (see Michael's Instagram photo below) on Snæfellsnes peninsula in West Iceland, but had previously set up their tent close to the magnificent Kirkjufell mountain by Grundafjörður fjord on the peninsula, during a beautiful starlight night as you can see in Gilbert’s great Instagram photo (top and below).
We will keep following Michael and Gilbert. After visiting Snæfellsnes peninsula they are now heading back south to do the Golden Circle and visit a number of waterfalls.
