At least two small boats sank in the old harbour during yesterday’s storm. A third boat, appropriately named “Storm”, had come loose, but was saved. The following video, shows conditions by the pier last night.

The three small boats were moored at the Ægisgarður pier in the old harbour in downtown Reykjavík. The boat Stormur (Storm) had broken loose early last night and drifted into the harbour quay, and its owner who was interviewed on local media feared it would sink at any moment. Overnight, however, Search and Rescue teams managed to get on board the boat and drag and re tie its mooring ropes.

The owners of two other boats were not as fortunate. The Icelandic National Broadcasting Service reported at three in the morning that two boats had sunk during the storm, even as Storm was rescued. At that time other boats in the harbour seemed to be safe, although the local newspaper Morgunblaðið reports that several seem to have suffered some damages.

The local newspaper Morgunblaðið reports that most ships in the Icelandic fleet had sailed to harbour before the storm hit. Virtually the entire fishing fleet, including most trawlers had sailed to harbour. Morgunblaðið reports tha there have not been fewer ships at sea in Icelandic waters since last Christmas Eve.
