A severe weather warning has been issued for the Central Highlands and South-East Iceland tomorrow. A severe gale and heavy rain is expected in the south-east and Central Highlands. Other parts of the country are expected to be spared the worst effects of this first autumn storm of the year.
A second storm, which is expected on Saturday, is expected to be more powerful. It is expected to be felt primarily in the east, in South East and East Iceland.
Rainy and overcast
On Thursday and Friday the Icelandic Meteorological Office is forecasting a fresh- or strong breeze and intermittent rain in South East and East Iceland. Mostly light winds and fair weather in the north and northeast. Fresh breeze in the west and south west. Temperature 7-12°C (44.6-53.6°F) and mostly overcast in the south, west and south-west.
On Saturday the IMO is forecasting a second major autumn storm with strong easterly wind and rain in all parts, especially in the southeast and east where heavy rain is expected. Temperature 8-14°C (46.4-57.2°F), warmest in the west and north.
On Sunday the winds will have calmed to a strong southerly breeze and intermittent rain, especially in the south and the Central Highlands, but mostly fair in the northeast. Temperatures 8 t-14°C (46.4-57.2°F), warmest in the north.
Good chance to glimpse the Aurora
While the weather isn't looking particularly inviting for the remainder of the week, tonight's Aurora forecast is looking promising. By midnight the sky above South and West Iceland, as well as the South-West and the Capital Region, are expected to be clear. With an Aurora activity index of 4 we should therefore have a good chance of glimpsing the Northern Lights!
The bottom line? Put on wind- and waterproof clothes, dress in layers and keep your eyes on the sky!
