The world was caught between bewilderment and laughter after US president Donald Trump tweeted out the incoherent word covfefe this week. Thanks to a design contest by the Metropolitan Bus Service Strætó, a bus carrying Trump's face and the letters covfefe could soon be seen around the streets of Reykjavík.
Strætó's Masterpiece contest asks contestants to submit their proposals for a design for one of the city's busses. The proposed design which receives the most votes will make it onto a metropolitan bus.
The covfefe entry is currently leading the contest with over 350 votes. It was submitted yesterday by Jóhann Guðmundsson. The contest ends on the 1st of July.
Designs can be vetoed
Perhaps weary of the experience others have had with open contests of this sort, Strætó reserves the right to refuse a proposal of it is considered to go against public decency, infringe on copyright. privacy or breach the ethical guidelines of the Icelandic Union of Advertising Agencies.
It was only last year that an online poll to name a new polar research vessel of the Natural Environment Research Council of the UK ended in hilarity. Boaty McBoatface won the popular vote by a wide margin. In the the end, the ship was named after beloved naturalist Sir David Attenborough. One of the ships remotely operated sub-sea vehicles was named Boaty McBoatface, though.
