Each year Gilið, a steep street in the town’s centre, is transformed into a huge drop-in and kicker built of industrial containers. That’s where some of Iceland’s best snowboarders will showcase their talent in an attempt to win the Big Jump title. Among this year’s competitors are brothers Halldór Helgason, Eiríkur Helgason, Guðlaugur Hólm Guðmundsson, Einar Stefánsson and Austrian pro-snowboarders David Pils and Max Glatzl.
A music festival, three days long, will also take place during the weekend, beginning with a series of concerts in Sjallinn nightclub this evening. Tickets can be bought on midi.is, Eymundsson in Akureyri and at the venue.
Egill Tómasson, one of the festival’s organisers, says everything is about to fall into place for the Big Jump competition on Saturday.
“We are almost ready. We’ve transported truckloads of snow from Hlíðarfjall mountain to the town’s centre to make the kicker,” he explains.
