The Icelandic Environment Agency has given treasure hunters who had attempted to salvage unidentified valuables from a German merchant vessel SS Minden which sank in Icelandic waters a week to turn in a final report on their operations.
Mysterious treasure hunters
The company Advanced Marine Services Ltd. had been granted permission to conduct a search of the wreckage deep SE off the coast of Iceland in the summer of 2017, but were allowed to continue the search in July. The local newspaper Fréttablaðið reports that the treasure hunters have already exceeded the legal deadline on turning in a final report on the search as required by law.
In April 2017 the Icelandic Coast Guard ordered the treasure hunters to port after they were found to be engaged in unauthorized research or salvage operations in Icelandic waters. The case was referred to the Police which investigated the mysterious operation. The company engaged in the research then applied for a permit to continue the research which took place in the summer of 2017 and 2018.

The objective of the salvage operation were some unidentified valuables hidden onboard a German merchant marine vessel which was torpedoed by the Royal Navy during the first days of WWII. According to the farm manifest of the ship, SS Minden, it was not carrying anything of value. The crew of the Seabed Constructor told the Coast Guard that they were attempting to recover a safe from the ship, believed to contain gold bars.
