Police in South Iceland has issued a warning to visitors at the black sand beaches near the village of Vík in South Iceland. Visitors and tour guides are urged to show extra caution for the next few days when visiting the Reynisfjara and Kirkjufjara beaches, as well as the beach by Dyrhólaey peninsula.
Dangerous waves
According to the weather forecast ocean conditions are expected to be particularly rough, with larger than usual waves. Police in South Iceland warns that conditions at the beaches can easily become very dangerous in this kind of weather.

A strong wind blowing from the south will grow the waves which can be very powerful, even under normal conditions. The Icelandic Meteorological Office issued a storm warning for today.

Two fatal accidents have taken place at Reynisfjara and Kirkjufjara since last year. A 40 year old Chinese man drowned in January 2016 after a wave knocked him down at Reynisfjara beach and pulled him to sea. A similar tragic accident took place in January of this year when a 43 year old German woman drowned on Kirkjufjara beach.
