According to Vísir a German tour guide managed to warn off a tourist who had waded thoughtlessly into the ocean at Reynisfjara beach, South Iceland, in order to capture the ‘perfect shot’. The incident occurred last Tuesday and thankfully the man was not harmed.

Albeit beautiful, the inky-black sands can be an extremely dangerous place.
“It’s all too common that people venture too close to the shoreline. There are few places in the world where the undertow current is as strong as in Reynisfjara,” explains Bjarnheiður Hallsdóttir, head of Katla Information Centre in Vík.

An undertow is an offshore pull that a person standing in the wave-breaking zone can feel most strongly near their feet. There have been numerous accounts where foreign visitors have been caught in a strong undertow in Reynisfjara and in 2007 a foreign woman was swept into the ocean by a large wave and lost her life.
A big information sign is found on the beach which, among other facts, warns travellers of going too near the oceanfront.
