Visitors to Gullfoss waterfall and Geysir geothermal area are asked to use cleats to minimize the likelihood of slipping on the extremely icy conditions at these two popular tourist destinations. Park rangers have put up warning signs at both destinations asking visitors to use crampons/cleats while walking on the icy trails.
According to an announcement from the Icelandic Environment Agency the sudden rain which came at the tail of a long period of frosty weather has led to extremely icy conditions as all walking paths at both Gullfoss and Geysir are covered with glassy ice. Covering the walking paths with sand is only a stopgap measure, the agency points out, as the heavy rain washes the sand almost as fast as it's added to the paths.
We at Iceland Insider would like to ask travellers to take this warning seriously: Fractured and broken bones, sprained joints or bruises caused by slipping on ice are extremely common in weather conditions like these. Nobody wants to spend the dream vacation in Iceland at the Emergency Room!
