According to the National Broadcasting Service, travellers are advised to stay clear of Öskjuvatn lake, central highlands, for what is left of summer. A massive landslide fell into the lake, from the southeastern rim of Askja caldera, around midnight July 21st. Parts of Askja’s rim might still be unstable which could trigger another landslide and a tsunami.
Around 60 million cubic metres (2 billion cubic feet) fell from the slopes of Askja and into Öskjuvatn lake, causing a great tsunami which travelled all the way into Víti crater.
