The storm which passed over Iceland over the weekend caused significant disruption to travel as all major roads were closed to traffic. Numerous travellers missed theif flights as all international air travel was canceled, while others were left stuck in emergency shelters in towns along the Ring Road. Some, however, were left stranded in snow on the road. Among the travellers who were caught by the storm was a couple which was visiting Þingvellir National Park. The couple spent 20 hours stranded in their car on the east coast of Þingvallavatn lake.

A Park Ranger from Þingvellir National Park discovered the couple which was cooped up in a small 4×4 which was stuck in snow near the farm Miðfell on the east coast of the lake. The ranger discovered the couple early today, Monday.
The couple had been driving by the lake early morning yesterday, Sunday, when they were caught by the storm and got stuck. The blowing snow and heavy blizzard caused deep snow build-up on the road. The car got stuck in the middle of the road, and was quickly buried by the blowing snow.

The local newspaper Morgunblaðið reports that the woman is pregnant. Rather than leave the car vehicle and brave the storm the couple decided to wait out the weather in their vehicle. A manager at the National Park told Morgunblaðið the people we well equipped.
They had food and sleeping bags, but nevertheless the woman was very cold, so the ranger took her to the Park Center. The woman's husband stayed with the car.
With zero visibility and the vehicle dead in the middle of the road the husband decided to stay with the car to help move the car. The IRCA has been notified the car is stuck in the middle of the road and the road impassable.
