ICE-SAR in South East Iceland launched a search of area after a park ranger in Vatnajökull National Park had notified a car rental that one of their cars appeared to have been left abandoned at a parking lot by Sandfell. Sandfell, especially the picturesque cemetery, with it's lone tree, is a popular scenic stop on the Ring Road through the region.

The park ranger had noticed that a gray Volkswagen Polo had stood on the parking lot for some time. It is not known how long the car had been parked by Sandfell. The French traveller signed a month long rental contract for the vehicle on December 24. He was last seen at the Skaftafell visitor center in Vatnajökull National Park on December 29. The distance between Sandfell and Skaftafell is only 12 km (7.5 mi).
