Search and rescue units from South Iceland rescued a foreign traveller who had fallen and broken his ankle while trying to reach Gljúfrabúi waterfall near the popular Seljalandsfoss waterfall in South Iceland. The accident took place on Saturday afternoon, and it took a couple of hours to reach the man and carry him to level ground. He was then taken by ambulance to an emergency room where doctors attended to his injuries.
Gljúfrabúi waterfall has been described as a hidden or secret waterfall. It is located in the small river of Gljúfrá (canyon river) a short distance to the north of Seljalandsfoss. The name means He who dwells in the canyon. The waterfall is 40 m tall (131 ft), and it is hidden behind a tall cliff, dropping into a narrow gorge. Reaching the waterfall is difficult, as there is no walking path into the canyon. Instead you must wade the ice cold river.
The spectacular beauty of the waterfall is worth it! But beware that the rocks are slippery and the bottom of the river is uneven. You don't want to spend your vacation in Iceland limping along with your leg in a cast!
