Members of the Search and Rescue unit Víkverji from the village of Vík rescued a foreign traveller from the sheer ocean cliffs east of by Reynisfjara beach in South Iceland. The local news site visir.is reports that the woman, who was around thirty and in good physical condition, had climbed high up into the cliffs by the ocean in an area which has been closed off and inaccessible for a long time.
Reynisfjara beach is one of the most popular, but also one of the most dangerous tourist destinations in Iceland. Travellers have on numerous occasions narrowly escaped being swept to sea by the unpredictable waves on the beach. Earlier this year a 40 year old Chinese man drowned after he was swept to the sea while taking photographs in front of the basalt stacks at the east edge of the beach.

The woman had climbed high into the cliffs east of the cave at the east end of the beach, opposite the Reynisdrangar stacks. Having climbed high in the cliff the traveller suddenly realized she couldn't climb back, nor could she continue up the cliff, leaving her stranded.
Eight members from the Search and Rescue unit Víkverji participated in the operation which involved laying a climbing rope to the woman. According to the chairman of the Search and Rescue unit conditions were difficult, but the operation nevertheless proceeded smoothly, and the woman had been rescued by half past three in the afternoon.
