Travelers, a family of four, airlifted to hospital after rollover accident on Ring Road 3296

Four preople were airlifted to the National University Hospital in Reykjavík after a serious rollover accident on the Ring Road near the bridge over Kúðafljót river, west of Kirkjubæjarklaustur village in SE Iceland. The people, who all belong to the same family, were traveling west toward Reykjavík when the accident took place.

The accident caused some traffic delays on the Ring Road in SE Iceland yesterday afternoon.

According to the Police in S. Iceland the accident took place at 13:30 on Sunday afternoon. All four people who were traveling in the vehicle suffered injuries. Two of the people only suffered minor injuries, while a third person suffered non critical injuries. The fourth traveler, a young girl, born in 2003, suffered more serious injuries, as she was thrown out of the vehicle during the accident.

Accidents common in the area
It is not clear what caused the accident. The Police is still investigating the accident and its cause. However, accidents are frequent on the part of the Ring Road near of Kirkjubæjarklaustur. Speeding is a constant problem om the Ring Road in SE Iceland. The area around Kirkjubæjarklaustur has several beautiful sights, and a view that can distract drivers. In some cases accidents have been caused by drivers suddenly slowing down and turning off the road to enjoy a scenic spot. Drivers also tend to underestimate the challenge posed by the narrow winding Ring Road in this region.
