Travel warning: Severe gale and heavy rain in South, South East Iceland 6455

A travel warning has been issued for South and South East Iceland today. Severa gale and heavy rain are expected. Travellers are adviced that individual gusts can easily reach hurricane force. With heavy rain, which also brings reduced visibility, driving can become challenging. ICE-SAR has also warned of an elevated risk of landslides in the affected areas.

The Icelandic Meteorological Office has warned that severe gale (mean wind more than 20 m/s) is expected at the south coast until evening. Moderate or heavy rain is also expected in Southeast-Iceland and the Eastfjords in the afternoon and until Friday morning.

Travel warnings issued

ICE-SAR has issued the following travel warning for today: 

Heavy Rain – SE/E Iceland. Heavy rain expected from Jökulsárlón to Vopnafjörður this afternoon (Oct 19) until tomorrow morning (Oct 20). Increased river levels and risk of landslides in the area.

A second travel alert has been issued for tomorrow:

Very strong winds (average wind speed 20m/s, 72km/h, 55mph) on the south coast today, Oct 19 from Seljalandsfoss to Vík and from Skaftafell to Jökulsárlón! Drivers with camper vans or trailers are advised to delay travel until wind calms.
