According to the Icelandic Broadcasting Service, the Civil Protection and Energy Management in Iceland has issued a travel warning for Sólheimajökull glacier, South Iceland. The road to the glacier is closed off and local rescue units will patrole the area while the warning is in place.
Barði Theodórsson, guide with Icelandic Mountain Guides, says the warning was long overdue.
“Part of the glacier is being lifted by massive amounts of water which has collected beneath it. Ice could break off the glacier at any time.”
Barði says many travellers are not aware of how dangerous it can be to hike up a glacier without a professional guide and the right equipment.
“The glacier does not look dangerous but it is to those who are not familiar with the area, Icelandic weather conditions and nature,” he concludes.
