Travel alert: Ring Road has been closed by Hólmsá river in S.E. Iceland 7043

The Police in South Iceland and the Road and Coastal Administration have closed the Ring Road between the farm Flatey and the bridge over Hólmsá river in Hornafjörður fjord South East Iceland. According to an announcement from the Police in South Iceland the road will likely remain closed for the remainder of the day. Several other roads in East Iceland are impassable due to heavy rain. Travellers are urged to show caution.

An emergency shelter for travellers who are stuck has been established at Mánagarður and Hofgarður farm. (See map below). 

This is the second time today that the Ring Road in S.E. Iceland is closed to traffic. This morning flooding in Berufjörður fjord, to the N.E. of Hornafjörður fjord, was closed to traffic.

The Police in South Iceland closed a three kilometer (1.9 mi) stretch of the Ring Road between Hólmsá rivers. Hólmsá The Road and Coastal Administration is battling Hólmsá river which has weakened parts of the shoulder of the road, and is threatening to wash away sections of the road. The IRCA is cutting a channel through the road to allow the river to drain to the ocean.

People are urged to show caution and adjust their travel plans accordingly.
