The Icelandic Meteorological Office warns that snow and sleet is expected at higher altitudes in North Iceland today. The Icelandic Road and Coastal Authority has also warned of „winter conditions“ on the Ring Road in N.E. Iceland, where it crosses the Mývatns- og Möðrudalsöræfi part of the Central Highlands from lake Mývatn to East Iceland.

Some roads only accessible to 4x4s
Drivers should expect snow and ice on other mountain and heath roads in North and East Iceland, including the road to Dettifoss waterfall. Several heaths in East Iceland are currently impassable or only suited for large SUVs and specially equipped trucks.

According to the Icelandic National Broadcasting Service the IRCA is ploughing and de-icing the road. A spokesman for the IRCA pointed out that conditions like these were quite common in June, and that he could remember far worse snow conditions early in the summer.

Remember to always check road conditions with the IRCA and the weather forecast with the IMO before heading out!
