Foreign travellers can now experience Iceland on a stormy day. When every other organised tour has been cancelled due to severe weather, tour operator Iceland Expeditions will take you on a special ‘stormhike’ tour that lets guests brave the elements in a safe manner.

The four hour-long tour starts off with a visit to a local Search and Rescue station in Reykjavík where guests get to experience first-hand the specialized high-tech equipment, the custom fitted vehicles and facilities used for rescue missions. As a matter of fact, the guides are all members of local rescue teams, so guests are in very safe hands.

Next the tour will take you out into the storm where – a unique and exhilarating experience according to those who have tried it.

“For many, this is a completely new experience. Some find it a bit daunting, but also very exciting,” Kormákur Hermannsson, one of Iceland Expeditions’ owners, told Vísir. Adding that this winter the demand for storm-hikes has exceeded supply.
