A group of tourists was spotted yesterday wandering to a snowy cliff edge near Gullfoss to get a closer look at the famous waterfall. Guide Helgi Guðmundsson witnessed the incident and says the people put themselves in grave danger by venturing so close to the edge.
Helgi told the National Broadcasting Service, RÚV, that the group climbed the fence that marks the path from the parking area to the view point, and continued towards the snow covered brink. At this time of year drizzle from the waterfall will freeze and form a slick ice-plate which one can easily loose footing on.

Snow cornices will also form on the verge of the cliffs during winter. Cornices are extremely dangerous and people are advised to always avoid travelling above or below them.
“Only God’s good grace could have determined between life and death had anything gone wrong yesterday,” Helgi concludes.
Iceland has many scenic cliffs that are unguarded and there have been numerous accidents in the past which involved people wandering too close to the edge and slipping or falling over.
