The number of foreign visitors in Iceland is expected to be less than 10% at most in 2018, reaching 2.5 million. The Keflavík airport authority also estimates that the number of travellers passing through Keflavík Airport will exceed 10 million, an increase of 18%.

The growth in the number of travellers passing through the airport is not least due to the expansion of the cross-Atlantic flights offered by the Icelandic airlines Icelandair and WOW air. The number of passengers who only stop over at the airport, without visiting Iceland, is expected to grow by nearly a third.

While a growth rate of nearly 10% is significant for any industry, it represents a significant slowdown from previous years. The number of foreign visitors to Iceland has increased by 20-40% each year for the past few years. The Keflavík airport authority estimated in 2016 that the number of visitors in 2017 would be 2.2 million, an increase of 24.7%. Final figures for 2017 have not been published.
