The road along the south shore of Seyðisfjörður fjord in Eastern Iceland has been closed. The Icelandic National Broadcasting Service reports that a part of the road to the south of Seyðisfjörður town had been eaten away after unusually heavy rain. The road between Seyðisfjörður and the town of Egilsstaður is not affected.
Tuesday and Wednesday morning saw heavy rains in Eastern Iceland. The weather station in Seyðisfjörður measured 100 mm (4.94 inches) of rain over the past 24 hours. The weather stations in the villages of Fáskrúðsfjörður and Neskaupsstaður saw similar downpours. The downpour is expected to slow down by afternoon Wednesday.
The Icelandic Meteorological Office has also issued a warning to travellers in Eastern Iceland. People are advised that due to the heavy rainfall rivers and streams in Eastern Iceland have swelled. Travellers are also warned that the likelihood of rock- and mudslides from mountainsides in the Eastern fjords in East Iceland has increased. These warnings are in effect until tonight, at least.
