Exactly a year ago, the Free the Nipple campaign took Iceland and the Icelandic media by storm. Young Icelandic women began to post pictures of their breasts on social media, using the hashtag FreeTheNipple, in order to reclaim control of their bodies.

To celebrate the one year anniversary of the campaign, some special events have been scheduled to take place over the weekend. Women are urged to assemble in Laugardalslaug swimming pool on Saturday (26th of March) between 1-4pm for a topless dip. Later that evening a free screening of the film Suffragette takes place at Bíó Paradís (Hverfisgata 54).

“We need to keep the dialog going because this is an important issue that needs to be addressed. We’ve noticed a big change in the past year, but there are many more battles to fight,” Karen Björk Eyþórsdóttir, one of the event’s organisers, told Fréttablaðið newspaper.
The Free the Nipple movement is an international equality movement focused upon the double standards regarding the censorship of female breasts and society’s tendency to sexualise the female body. The campaign suddenly went viral in Iceland last year after a high school student was bullied by a young man for having posted a picture on Twitter that showed her nipple.
