Today's storm: Bus blown off road in S. Iceland, Ambulance blown off road East of Reykjavík 6048

A bus carrying 15 passengers skidded off the road near Freysnes rest stop and gas station east of Skaftafell National Park in the Öræfi region in South Iceland. Freysnes is in the foothills of Öræfajökull glacier, by its outlet glacier Svínafellsjökull. Police and Search and Rescue Units were dispatched to assist the passengers of the bus, and two other buses which were stuck due to the weather.

Freysnes

According to the local news site vísir the accident took place after three in the afternoon. Vísir reports that the bus which skidded off the road rolled over, but that none of the passengers suffered serious injuries.

An ambulance was blown off the road on the Ring Road 1 east of Reykjavík, by the junction leading to Bláfjöll mountains. The ambulance had been responding to a bus which had been blown off the road nearby, and then gotten stuck. The bus had been carrying eight passengers, none of whom was hurt. Two ambulances were nevertheless dispatched to the scene. One of the two ambulances was then blown off the road.

Nobody was injured, but it took 3-4 hours to get the ambulance back onto the road. According to witnesses who spoke to Vísir the storm was so powerful that first responders could not remain standing.
