The small fishing village of Þórshöfn was hit by a tragic fire on Monday when the village‘s only grocery store and the centre of village were destroyed as the village gas station burned down. Residents of Þórshöfn who spoke to the local newspaper Fréttablaðið said the loss of Grillskálinn (The Grill-hut) was a major blow to the small community of roughly 400 people.
Kapítóla Rán Jónsdóttir, who had managed Grillskálinn for the past couple of years told the local news site Vísir that the small store/restaurant had been the centre of the village for 50 years:
“We served traditional home cooked meals for lunch, and people came over to eat and meet others, not just for lunch, but also in the morning and after work. Came in, had a cup of coffee and chatted with one another. The Grillhut served as our community centre, and had been for 50 years.”
When fire fighters arrived at the scene it was already too late to save the small building. Instead they focused on saving propane and gasoline tanks which stood by the gas station.
