Rescue units from Landeyjar and Hvolsvöllur, South Iceland, were called to Steinholtsá river in Þórsmörk at 6pm yesterday to assist travellers who’s jeep had gotten stuck in the river.

The passengers, three women, called for help when water began to pour over the bonnet of the vehicle, leaving it powerless, and the women trapped.

Rescue units responded swiftly and quickly got the driver and occupants to dry land. According to Vísir.is the vehicle was pulled out some time later that evening.

Ordinarily small jeeps should be able to cross Steinholtsá river. However, heavy showers in the southern regions of the country meant the river’s water volume increased substantially. When in doubt about whether to cross or not, a good rule to follow is: Do not drive into rivers that you would not attempt to wade into.
