Late last night ICE-SAR Central Highland rapid response units were notified that a group of foreign hikers had gotten lost somewhere near Landmannalaugar highland oasis. The hikers, three Spanish women, had managed to call some of their travel companions to let them know they were lost.
ICE-SAR units who are permanently stationed in the Central Highlands immediately took steps to locate the women who were believed to be lost somewhere near Landmannalaugar. When the initial search failed to locate the women a larger force of ICE-SAR members from South Iceland was called out.
Despite the very spotty and unreliable mobile phone coverage in the Central Highlands the women managed to get their GPS coordinates to the rescuers. At this time 20 ICE-SAR members were already engaged in the search, with more on their way. With the coordinates the rescue units quickly managed to find the women and the reinforcements were called off.
According to a statement from ICE-SAR the weather last night was beautiful, with clear skies and a starry sky.
