Thousands of protesters want Iceland's coalition government to resign 1911

13. mar 2023 20:15

Thousands of protesters are expected to gather outside Iceland's parliament in the center of Reykjavík today to rally against the unpopular coalition government of the Progressive Party (Framsóknarflokkurinn) and the Independence Party (Sjálfstæðisflokkurinn).

The organisers want the coalition to resign. They encourage protesters to show up with keys as a symbol to the government to hand in their keys to power.

The protesters have a variety of sentiments with more than 100 reasons listed on the Facebook page of the organisers. Many think that the coalition is not capable of handling wage negotiations with members of the Association of Academics who have been on strike since mid-April, and will be joined by 2,100 nurses at the National University Hospital of Iceland tonight. Others are protesting the coalition's plan of erecting more power plants in the central highlands, to name just two of the bigger issues.

Last winter protesters repeatedly gathered at Austurvöllur square. Today’s protests could be a beginning of similar wave of demonstrations.

Today's protest will start at 17 (5pm).
