Dagur B. Eggertsson, mayor of Reykjavík, announced yesterday plans to construct thousands of new apartments within the existing city limits, rather than creating new suburban neighbourhoods around the edge of the city as has been done over the past decades.
The new apartments are set to come to Vatnsmýri, the Holt neighbourhood, Laugarnes and in Elliðaárvogur bay in the next several years. Plans are to fill in empty spaces around the city to create a more compact, functional and environmentally friendly city. Also, easy access to transportations and close proximity to central Reykjavík has fuelled interest in the neighbourhoods.
The mayor says most of the neighbourhoods will be a mix of residential, commercial and cultural areas.
“The plan will not only improve Reykjavík as a city, but also our society as a whole,” he said to the National Broadcasting Service.
