An expert in seismic activity with the Icelandic Meteorological Office told the local newspaper Morgunblaðið that the quakes detected in Bárðarbunga volcano this morning should not be interpreted as signs of an immediate eruption. Bryndís Ýr Gísladóttir, at the IMO said the activity seemed to follow a pattern Bárðarbung had been demonstrating in recent months:
We have not seen seismic unrest associated with the onset of an eruption, or anything like that. The activity this morning is similar to the activity we have seen in recent months: Short earthquake swarms with a few powerful tremors.
She added that the last episode of this type had occurred a month ago. Bárðarbunga has shown increasing seismic activity since last fall, with dozens of powerful quakes and earthquake swarms.

This morning saw a powerful earthquake swarm in Bárðarbunga volcano. Five powerful earthquakes, larger than 3 on the Richter scale, were detected between 8:57 AM and 9:45 AM. All the quakes took place in the same area in the north-eastern part of the caldera, ca 6-9 km (3.7-5.6 miles) north-east and east-north-east of the caldera center, the epicenter of four of the quakes was just 100 m (328 ft) below the surface.
