While we do not know the cause of these accidents, and await the findings of the investigation of the Transportation Safety Board, many have pointed out that foreign travelers are all too often distracted by the scenery while they are driving. Rather than keeping their eyes on the road ahead people are too frequently watching the scenery around them. In other cases people seem to be attempting to reading the map or looking something up on their smartphone when they should be focusing on driving.
This certainly appears to have been the case with a dangerously distracted driver who narrowly escaped killing himself and other motorists when he swerved repeatedly onto the wrong lane while driging on the Ring Road in West Iceland earlier this week.
Dangerous driving caught on video
A local man who was driving behind the person caught the behavior on video. He shared the video on Facebook where it went viral, sparking a conversation about the dangers of distracted drivers.
The car was a rental car with what appeared to be foreign travelers. Örvar Gunnarsson, who shot the video, told the local news site Vísir that he drove behind the car from the tunnel beneath Hvalfjörður fjord to the town of Borgarnes in West Iceland. The video shows the car repeatedly swerve into the wrong lane, driving on the wrong side of the road, before returning into the right lane.
On several occasions you can see cars approaching from the opposite direction, but narrowly escape a crash as the distracted driver appeared to come to his senses at the last moment. Örvar told Vísir that he was not amused by the terrifying show taking place on the road ahead of him:
There were numerous close calls where he almost crashed straight into cars coming from the opposite direction.
He said that he reported the incidence to the Police.
