According to Trausti Jónsson, one of the best know meteorologist in Iceland, the winter of 2015/2016 is the coldest since 1995. While the temperatures in Reykjavík have been the same as last year and 1961-1990 average, but -1.3°C lower than the average for the last 10 years. Temperatures in Akureyri, in North Iceland, and in the Central Highlands, were similarly lower last year than the last 10 year average.

Trausti analyses the figures of the Icelandic Meteorological office on his blog, finding that the months December, January and February, which are defined as the winter months by international standards. However, he points out that March should classified as a winter month in Iceland. Adding March to the picture is unlikely to push the temperature average for this winter up, as long-term forecasts for March envision either average temperatures or colder than usual.
