A massive fire in an industrial building in the town of Akureyri in North Iceland almost caused the evacuation of a residential neighborhood last night, according to the local fire department. Thick black smoke billowed over the roofs of neighboring houses after midnight. No-one was injured in the fire.
The fire department was notified of the fire at 00:40 and fought the flames all night, according to the National Broadcasting Service RÚV. Most of the smoke had died down by 3 a.m. according to police. Fire fighters were finishing up at the scene early Tuesday.
The industrial building stands by Goðanes in Akureyri and has housed a boatyard. Surrounding streets have been closed to traffic. The local fire chief told RÚV late last night that the building was expected to burn completely to the ground.
