According PK Arkitektar the main focus of the design was to create “a semirural architecture that blends in with the landscape”. Earth leftover from the excavation was used to create a wind-protecting bunker for the outdoor terraces. The exterior is clad with burnt hardwood panelling while the roof is layered with grass, a traditional method used on old, Icelandic turf houses.

The bathroom has direct access to the terrace leading to the geothermal hot tub.

The concept behind the design was to minimise complex detailing in order to reduce need for costly maintenance and to create cabins with close to zero carbon footprints.

PK Arkitektar was established in in 1986 by architect Pálmar Kristmundsson. The studio has been
nominated for Mies Van Der Rohe awards twice and had its work published in several international design and architectural magazines.
