When the individual competition of the Crossfit Games 2016 starts this Wednesday (20 July) in California many eyes in Iceland will be glued to whichever screen that can deliver updates on the search for the world's fittest man and woman. In Katrín Tanja Davíðsdóttir Iceland has the reigning Crossfit world champion and two of her biggest rivals are also from Iceland. The 2011 and 2012 Crossfit world champion Annie Mist Þórdisdóttir is the the only woman to win the title twice and Ragnheiður Sara Sigmundsdóttir held on to first place most of the the 2015 competition only to be surpassed in the final events by Katrín Tanja and ending in the third place overall.
Not to dampen the local excitement, Iceland also has a title contender in the men's competition, Björgvin Karl Guðmundsson, who claimed the third place in last year's competition.
The 2016 CrossFit Games has just released this fantastic video about the upcoming battle between the three women, predicting that Iceland might even have them all standing atop the podium at the end of the gruelling competition.
In the video you can see how the girls train and get ready for the big event. The video also includes a visit to the legendary Reykjavík gym Jakaból, where they grow all the giants, hosted by Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson, one of world's strongest men, also known as the Mountain from the wildly popular TV series The Game of Thrones.
The 2016 CrossFit Games take place on 19 to 24 July at the StubHub Center in Carson City, which is located 13 miles south of downtown Los Angeles in California, with the individual competition starting on Wednesday.
The Crossfit Games season is broken up into three stages culminating in Carson. As explained on the Crossfit Games website at this point in the season the field has been whittled down from hundreds of thousands of athletes to 40 men and 40 women in addition to 40 teams, 40 teenagers, and 200 masters.
