Visitors to Hraunfossar waterfalls in West Iceland, one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Iceland, will now be expected to pay for parking, even if they will still be able to enjoy the spectacularly view for free. The money raised by the new fees will be used to maintain the parking lot and walking paths around the waterfall.

Hraunfossar are only the latest of popular tourist destinations to introduce parking fees. Earlier this summer the Vatnajökull National Park announced it would start charging parking fees at Dettifoss waterfall in North Iceland, and at the Skaftafell forest in South Iceland. Among the chief attractions in Skaftafell is Svartifoss waterfall.

The parking fee in Vatnajökull National Park will be 500 ISK per day for passenger cars, more for tour buses. Landowners at Hraunfossar have not yet announced how much they will charge passenger cars for parking, but tour bus operators will be expected to pay 6,000 ISK for stopping by the waterfall.
