The amphibious assault ship Iwo Jima arrived in Reykjavík harbor yesterday. The vessel is carrying 1,700 marines who will be participating in military exercises in Þjórsárdalur valley in South Iceland in the coming days. The military exercises in Iceland are part of a NATO exercise called Trident Juncture.

The Icelandic Coast Guard and Police have participated in the exercises in Iceland. Yesterday the Coast Guard exercised coordinated rescue operations with the Danish Coast Guard. Meanwhile US marines from the USS Iwo Jima trained on Reykjanes peninsula, getting to know Icelandic conditions. The marines were training in Icelandic conditions, as well as exercising troop transport.
