Northern lights fans in the capital area and around southwest Iceland can expect quite a show tonight (Tuesday). According to the Icelandic Met Office’s (IMO) excellent Aurora forecast service we can expect grade four activity (scale 1-9) which is indeed promising as IMO explains that grade 2 (low activity) can be beautiful and grade 3 (moderate) can be dazzling.
IMO builds its forecast on combined information on aurora activity, cloud cover, sunlight and moonlight.
We can expect clear skies from Hvalfjörður fjord to the north, Reykjanes peninsula to the south and along the south coast all the way to Vatnajökull glacier to the east. According to IMO it will be dark from 17.19 (5.19 pm) to 9.52 (9.52 am) tomorrow. Sunset is at 16.10 (4.10 pm) and as the moon sets quite early tonight, at 20.31 (8.31 pm), the stage could hardly be better prepared.
