The road to Sólheimajökull, the long outlet glacier on the southwest side of Mýrdalsjökull, has been opened. On Friday the police commissioner of South Iceland closed access to the popular travel destination because of the intense earthquake swarm that has been shaking Katla, the sub-glacial volcano in Mýrdalsjökull. If a eruption starts in the large volcano a big glacier outburst flood is expected Múlakvísl river and other rivers in the area of Sólheimajökull.

Sólheimajökull is close to the Ring Route (Highway 1) with a good parking space close by and is a popular hiking destination among travellers, both local and foreign.

Small glacial flood occur regularly in the region of Sólheimajökull glacier, noticeable for travellers by smell of sulfuric gases near rivers close to the glacier. Travellers are advised to avoid the area when the floods are ongoing as the gases can be dangerous.

The aviation colour code from green to yellow in accordance with recommended International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) procedures. This alert is issued when a volcano is exhibiting signs of elevated unrest above known background level.
