The ring road around Iceland, “Hringvegurinn”, was completed forty years ago today. The road, also known as Route 1, is 1,332 kilometres (828 miles) long and connects many of Iceland’s most densely populated areas.
In 1971 the Icelandic parliament agreed to finish the ring road with the construction of a road and bridge over Skeiðarársandur in Southeast Iceland. The project took three years to complete and the bridge was opened on July 14th 1974, on the 1100th anniversary of the country’s settlement.
