The proposed “nature passport” legislation will not pass through Alþingi, Iceland’s parliament before summer recess according to daily newspaper Morgunblaðið, and probably it’s dead in the water.

The minister of industry and commerce Ragnheiður Elín Árnadóttir’s proposal would require both Icelanders and visitors from abroad to purchase this “passport” if they want to travel in the central highlands or visit Iceland’s national parks.

The minister’s scheme has been met with fierce resistance, as it will create a new level of bureaucracy and cost. Even more importantly the right to travel freely around the country has been protected by Icelandic law for centuries and a big part of the nation is not ready to relinquish what is considered a sacred birthright.
